CAP
opened its doors in Bradford, helping people in financial difficulty, in August
1996 with a donation of £10 and just one client!
Its
founder, John Kirby, brought a wealth of personal experience to CAP in terms of
debt and money management; previously John had been a successful business man,
working in the finance industry, had fallen on hard times and faced bankruptcy.
It was during this period of extreme financial difficulty that John used all his
previous work expertise to pay off his creditors and get out of debt. In
effect he learnt first hand what CAP now does for others in similar
circumstances.
From that
small beginning in 1996 CAP has grown. It is now an international debt
counselling charity offering face to face support to those struggling under the
burden of debt and currently handles £65 million pounds of client debt.
Although the charity has a Christian ethos, the service is open to all members
of society, regardless of belief, race, sexual orientation etc.
CAP works
with a growing network of centres in partnership with local churches.
Daventry United Reformed Church became part of that network in the summer of
2010 and appointed Terry Charker as the designated lead within the church to
take the work forward.
Terry is
the CAP Centre Manager at Daventry United Reformed Church. He has over 8
years experience in the finance industry, providing non-judgemental budgeting
advice and support. His aim is to simply show the love of Jesus Christ
through the CAP programme, remembering that Jesus said, 'Come to me, all of you
who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest'. (Matthew 11: 28)
What
CAP can do for people experiencing financial difficulty:
CAP
offers a FREE really comprehensive service - not just for a few weeks of good
intentions but for up to 5 years until people are debt free. The CAP
organisation works to a 5 step programme which looks like this:
Step 1
- Home Visit
After
calling each client is visited in their own home several times by a debt coach
and a befriender from their local CAP centre. On the first visit a
comprehensive financial fact-find is filled in.
Step 2
- An Effective Budget
The
fact-find is then sent to CAP HQ in Bradford, where a team of experts work out a
realistic budget, by prioritising essential bills, negotiating affordable
payments with each creditor and working to stop unfair interest and charges.
Step 3
- CAP Account
A CAP
Account (which act like a simple bank account) is set up by CAP in Bradford.
The client makes one weekly or monthly payment into their account to cover all
their bills and debts, which is then distributed on their behalf.
Step 4
- Insolvency
If a
client is in severe debt then CAP can walk them through the appropriate
insolvency route. CAP can help existing clients with insolvency costs in
cases of severe hardship, filling out forms and attending court with
clients.
Step 5
- Support Until Debt Free
Clients
continue to use their CAP Account to pay their bills and debts and are supported
by a team until they are debt free and beyond.
